» CREDIL - IETF 84 meeting in Vancouver

Michael Richardson attended the 84th IETF meeting in Vancouver.
(www.ietf.org. the IETF is the Internet Engineering Task Force. The people who gave us IP, TCP and HTTP and many other protocols).

While Michael has done extensive work on the IPsec protocols in the past 15 years, this was the first IETF at which Michael was acting as a Working Group co-chair.
The ROLL WG is about layer-3 MESH networks: Routing Over Low-power and Lossy metworks (LLNs). Michael was asked to help the WG finish off the security components.
The ROLL WG met on Friday August 3, just before the end of the meeting, and got consensus for a plan to advance the security sections of the protocol.

Other interesting things that occured at IETF include: * Statement about how modern global standards organizations should behave: https://www.ietf.org/ibin/c5i?mid=6&rid=49&gid=0&k1=933&k2=64504&tid=1344792722 (http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.ietf.announce/56628) * A very good presentation by Van Jacobson on CoDel (http://recordings.conf.meetecho.com/Recordings/watch.jsp?recording=IETF84_TSVAREA&chapter=part_3, http://gettys.wordpress.com/2012/08/06/the-first-battle-won/ and https://plus.google.com/110299325941327120246/about). This is the REAL reason why Bell and Roger's networks are screwed up all the time. Nothing to do with P2P. * Homenet WG continues to make progress. This will revolutionize things for many of us who are the IT support for our parents, friends, etc. as it will virtually eliminate plugging things in wrong.

Anyone can participate in IETF processes: the documents are freely available, the mailing list discussion is the final arbiter of consensus, and you can attend the meetings via streamed MP3 + XMPP.
Unlike SDOs where companies or countries vote, the IETF simply doesn't vote. "Rough Consensus and Running Code"...

» CREDIL - Gosling 10th Anniversary next Friday

The gaggle will be meeting as usual on Friday May 4 - celebrating 10 years of history. Come on out to the Parliament Pub around 16:30-ish and join the group. http://www.goslingcommunity.org/ There are some regulars, and sometimes there are new people to meet ... like today I met someone who has been living a self-described "hermit" life for the last couple of years, but who wants to get out and engage more with communities of practice. He has been writing some gov't ministers on various topics (and getting answers!), so it was interesting to hear from him, and I hope we see him again.

» CREDIL - Smart Object Security Workshop

Michael was invited to the Smart Object Security Workshop workshop based upon his paper which can be found in the proceedings.

The Smart Object Security Workshop occurred at Ecole Polytechnique. The day started with a presentation about smart light bulbs, and
there was much concern about who would have control over the light bulbs in one's house. Clearly it was undesirable for the kid next door to control one's lights, but if that was the extent of the concern, did we need military grade security for a $3 lightbulb? The complexity is, what happens when someone controls several million (billion?) light bulbs in a city... and decides to turn them all on at the same time? Would the electrical grid melt down?

Why light bulbs? Well, because they are good examples of a real product being produced today, which has a non-existent user interface... not even a "reset" button you can hit with a paper clip!

"In its 2011 Coverity Scan Open Source Integrity Report, which was
released on Thursday, Coverity actually found that open source code
has fewer defects per thousand lines of code than proprietary software
code does.

"The line between open source and proprietary software will continue
to blur over time as open source is further cemented in the modern
software supply chain," noted Zack Samocha, Coverity's project
director for the Scan project."
